Chapter 33

Rebecca

“I’m fine… I’m great.” She lifted one shoulder, watching the nonchalance in her reflection's gesture. Was it believable? She wasn’t buying it. “So I’m dying. I have time.” She spread her lips in a wide, toothy smile. Too much. She picked up her under-eye concealer, running it under each eye. It was doing nothing to hide the red rim circling each eye, but it masked some of the puffiness.

Blowing out a breath, she said, “It’s not the first time I’ve died.” She chewed on her bottom lip. That would be the right approach if she was going for the shock factor. “I will find a way to beat this.”

A knock at the door startled her. “Yes?”

“It's Sophia, can I come in?”

She exhaled slowly. “Sure, come in.” She turned from the vanity to face the door as it cracked open.

Sophia’s honey-brown mane gleamed under the lights as she stepped into the room. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine. It's not the worst news I’ve ever had.” She winced. That wasn’t even one of the lines she’d practiced.

Sophia gave her an appraising stare. “My mama texted. She thinks we should go to Greece. The coven has many skilled witches who could work to unbind your curse. I think she’s right.”

“We can’t go to Greece. We have school on Monday.”

Sophia arched an eyebrow. “If you believe you’re dying, do you not think saving your life takes priority over school?”

Rebecca stood. “I have time, and I need to do some research here. It’s my father’s curse, which means the key to undoing it is likely here in this house. I’ll stop practicing magic until I find the answer.” She hoped she sounded more confident than she felt. Why had she said school?

Sophia gave her a curt nod. “I will help you.”

“Great, but first, I’m starving.”

“Me too,” a voice called.

Rebecca and Sophia stepped into the hall and leaned their heads into Rhea’s room. Rhea slung her legs over the side of her bed, lifting herself gingerly.

Rebecca rushed in, holding up an arm as Rhea leaned on it, patting her arm lightly. “Thanks. Help me downstairs?”

“Rhea, I can make you something or the nurse can. Stay up here. I’ll bring it to you.”

Rhea swatted her shoulder. “I’ve been cooped up long enough. Help me downstairs or I’ll go down myself.” Sophia moved forward, holding out her other arm, and gasped.

Rhea and Rebecca turned their gazes to her as her eyes rolled back in her head and she froze in place. Rhea looked at Rebecca, who shrugged, extricating herself from Rhea’s hold to move around her.

She touched Sophia’s arm, but the girl remained motionless, the whites of her eyes staring at nothing. “Rhea, sit for a minute so I can check on her, would you?”

Rhea pulled her arm free from Sophia, and her eyes rolled forward.

She stared at the two of them blankly for a moment, then said, “You should be dead.”
